Heat From Your Own Back Yard
While many products claim they are ‘green’, consider this: Geothermal uses
electricity to extract up to 3 units of heating from the earth for every unit
purchased from the electric company, thus the claim to be truly ‘green’. The
federal government agrees that geothermal might be the key to reducing our
dependence on foreign oil, as geothermal now has an unprecedented
30% tax
credit for the total cost of installation. Geothermal, or ground source heat pumps, have basically the same operation fundamentals as a ‘regular’ air source heat pump, using the same compressors, refrigerant, fans, and so forth, but use the earth’s more stable temperature to extract heat out of in winter, and reject heat from the house to in the summer, making geothermal heat pumps the cheapest to operate of any heating and cooling system on the market. A pump attached to the geothermal furnace circulates water through tubes deep in the earth, where local ground temperature of 55 degrees represents a much more stable environment than air temperatures, which can fluctuate from 0-90 degrees, depending on the season. Like a ‘regular’ heat pump, they do need some form of backup heating usually in the form of electric strip heat, but also can be coupled with a oil, gas or LP unit. However, the stable ground temperatures in the local area means that the geothermal system will not need ‘backed up’ until below about 10 degrees farenheit.. Most often, the 30% tax credit of geothermal almost pays for the ground loops, or the cost increase of a geothermal system, so depending on individual factors, may cost no more than a ‘conventional’ system to install, while operating at a fraction of the cost of either oil, LP gas, or electric heating systems. In fact, geothermal heat pumps, due to the relatively inexpensive cost of local electricity, operate about 6 times cheaper than LP, 5 times cheaper than oil, and 4 times cheaper than electric heat. Natural gas coupled with a conventional air conditioner is very competitive to geothermal in operating costs, but is only available in town.
